THAR BE WHALES ON THE HORIZON!
Whale Watching out of Half Moon Bay!

The annual gray whale migration is one of the world’s most magnificent and accessible wildlife spectacles. Each Fall, thousands of gray whales migrate from their summer feeding grounds around Alaska down to the waters of Baja California where they breed and calf. In the Spring, the whales and their calves migrate back up North for the Summer.

Their migration pathway follows closely along the California coast, providing us with outstanding opportunities for coastal whale watching.

PLUG IN AMERICA!

Plug In America

Plug In America

As part of Earth Day on the Bay on April 19, you can see environment-friendly electric cars up-close.  You might have seen some on the road but did you know that there are more than 180,000 of them in the US?  These aren’t golf carts or somebody’s hobby project.  They are complete, highway-capable cars from major manufacturers that people use daily like any other car.  Come at your leisure to see and learn about this kind of car.  An expert from non-profit PlugInAmerica.org will be on-hand to explain and answer questions about environmental benefits, charging at home, charging away from home, range, clean energy, incentives, performance, and more.

HOYO NEGRO PRESENTATION!

1:30pm-2:30pm in the MSC

Hoyo Negro could be the most important Paleo-indian site discovered in the last decade.  This now submerged site in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula provides the preface for a yet untold story about humans’ and beast’s constant struggle to survive on a prehistoric landscape so different from today’s.  The skeleton of a human rests at the floor of a large chamber inside an underwater cave with remains of extinct Pleistocene megafauna, such as giant ground sloths and saber-toothed cats.  Come see the informative presentation on this archeological treasure trove courtesy of the Hoyo Negro Project.

Translating the Tides is a contest through the Marine Science Institute in which students can win prizes for themselves and their classroom.  Students can showcase what they have learned by sharing artwork or poetry with us and their program sponsors. Earth Day on the Bay will highlight the wonderful efforts of the 2012-2013 winners by posting the students original artwork  in our gallery.  Some of their artwork can be seen at http://sfbaymsi.org/TTT/tttindex.html in the form of desktop calendars.
