It’s in the Bag – California Coastal Cleanup , a BayLines Original Article

Once again, San Mateo County residents came out by the thousands to clean up trash around the county on Coastal Cleanup Day, which took place Saturday, September 19. Residents on both the coast and bayside of the county slogged through sand, waded through mud, and climbed hillsides with buckets and bags, trash pickers and gloves, and a whole lot of spirit. Young and old participated as groups of friends and families turned out to make a difference in three short hours on the hot and sunny day.

Together, volunteers gathered an estimated 27,000 pounds of trash and over 3,700 pounds of recyclables from roadways, beaches, fields, and mud flats. Approximately 61 miles of total shoreline was cleaned by an estimated 4,165 volunteers at over 53 sites. Volunteers even found a lizard trapped in a crushed beer can!!! Check out some of the images taken from around San Mateo County on Coastal Cleanup Day below. Each year, this event shows how much of an impact we can make in our community by working together with so many different people throughout the County. Because of volunteers working together, nearly 320,000 pounds of trash has been picked up since 2005! To those volunteers reading this, thank you thank you thank you!!!

If you were not able to make it out this year, you can still make a difference. Coastal Cleanup Day is always the 3rd Saturday in September each year, so it is easy to mark your calendar now and plan for years to come. In addition, regular cleanups take place throughout the year all around the county.

Remember, if everyone does a little bit, together we can accomplish a lot!!

Animals : Bay vs. Ocean

Marine Biology studies the life in salt water! This session, students will explore the many species of animals that rely on salt water environments, both from the San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. Comparisons will be made between estuarine and oceanic animals’ adaptations, habitats, and feeding strategies. Students will get the opportunity to handle live animals, including fish, invertebrates, and even a shark! They will also get a chance to use real scientific equipment to catch these animals and study the water in which these animals live. All these activities will have the students working in small groups using teamwork and draw pictures of their favorite animals in their log books each day.

Whale of an Opportunity!

THAR BE WHALES ON THE HORIZON!
Whale Watching out of Half Moon Bay!

The annual gray whale migration is one of the world’s most magnificent and accessible wildlife spectacles. Each Fall, thousands of gray whales migrate from their summer feeding grounds around Alaska down to the waters of Baja California where they breed and calf. In the Spring, the whales and their calves migrate back up North for the Summer.

Their migration pathway follows closely along the California coast, providing us with outstanding opportunities for coastal whale watching.

Join MSI on a very special whale watching adventure! We will set sail from Half Moon Bay in search of migrating gray whales, humback whales, blue whales, dolphins, porpoises, seabirds and other majestic marine wildlife in their home waters. A great family outing!

Plug In America

As part of Earth Day on the Bay on April 19, you can see environment-friendly electric cars up-close.  You might have seen some on the road but did you know that there are more than 180,000 of them in the US?  These aren’t golf carts or somebody’s hobby project.  They are complete, highway-capable cars from major manufacturers that people use daily like any other car.  Come at your leisure to see and learn about this kind of car.  An expert from non-profit PlugInAmerica.org will be on-hand to explain and answer questions about environmental benefits, charging at home, charging away from home, range, clean energy, incentives, performance, and more.

HOYO NEGRO PRESENTATION!

1:30pm-2:30pm in the MSC

Hoyo Negro could be the most important Paleo-indian site discovered in the last decade.  This now submerged site in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula provides the preface for a yet untold story about humans’ and beast’s constant struggle to survive on a prehistoric landscape so different from today’s.  The skeleton of a human rests at the floor of a large chamber inside an underwater cave with remains of extinct Pleistocene megafauna, such as giant ground sloths and saber-toothed cats.  Come see the informative presentation on this archeological treasure trove courtesy of the Hoyo Negro Project.
